August 2015 Archives

This week I met up with the guys from Short Stack who are promoting their new album Homecoming. The band smashed its way onto the national scene with two gold certified albums before separating temporarily in 2012.

We talk about coming off from hiatus, the definition of irony, and not meeting John Travolta.

Unfortunately, some monkeys got loose in the studio during the interview and attacked the microphones, so there is some background noise early on in the recording, but it clears up.

This podcast will also air on The New Local Radio on Phoenix FM this Sunday 30 August after 10pm accompanied by a live performance from the band. Go to www.phoenixfm.org.au to listen in.

Check out their website at shortstackband.com.

After a long hiatus, welcome to the new season of Local Chats! Check in every fortnight for interesting conversations with interesting people.

The Bendigo Writers Festival has come through town yet again. Last year, I met with festival program coordinator Sue Gillett and best selling crime writer Michael Robotham. This year I was fortunate enough to catch up with the prolific Hazel Edwards for a chat.

Hazel is best known for her children's book "There's A Hippopotamus On Our Roof Eating Cake", but she has published over 200 books on a variety of subjects during her career. Some of her other notable releases include "F2M: The Boy Within", a young adult novel about gender transition co-written with Ryan Kennedy; "Trail Magic", a non-fiction adventure book co-written with her son; and "Authorpreneurship: The Business Of Creativity", a how-to guide for aspiring creators navigating the murky waters of self-promotion.

Hazel and I talk about some of her collaborations, using Skype to attend book launches, and Hazelnuts.

Hazel has an excellent website with a lot of resources at hazeledwards.com. She is also on Twitter (@muirmoir). Her memoirs will be released later this year.
